# Custom fields: the three fields every firm has and no software knows

> Add your own fields to contacts, companies, objects and deals: typed, searchable, exported with your lists, and created from an import column in one click.

**The problem this solves:** Every firm has three fields the software does not know; they end up in the notes and are never searchable.

**In short:** Add a field, pick its type, and it is on the record, in the lists, in the
export. An import column nobody knows becomes a field in one click. A field a colleague adds
or changes appears on every open settings page and form right away.

## What you can do

- **Add fields with a type** — text, number, date, choice; the internal name fills itself as
  you type the label.
- **Create fields from an import.** A column with no matching field becomes a field of your
  own, with a fitting type.
- **Export them.** Spreadsheets from contact exports carry your custom fields too.
- **Keep private ones.** Private contacts, companies and custom fields can be saved in your
  personal space, visible only to you.

## How it works

Fields save as you go and say when a change did not stick; renaming or removing an option
asks first. Deleting a field deletes what was entered in it.

## Limits and notes

- A field's values do not travel to the portals; portal fields are fixed by the portals.
